Fandango Quilt - finish #017

I loved this pattern the first time I saw it and knew I had to make it.  I started it in January 2018 and its my first finish in 2018!

The rings around the star is paper pieced and the other pieces were from templates.  Although it looks complex, once the pieces were cut, it was pretty easy and quick to assemble.

The quilt pattern is only available in kit form with Tula Pink Slow and Steady.  I wasn't a huge fan of this line of fabric when I so it online, but in person its beautiful!

I went for a lot of quilting on this one.  The border is quilted with a motif I learned on Youtube from Angela Walters, the Paisley Feather.  I love the texture it created is amazing. The star points are quilted with alternating feathers and arched bands.  The continuous curve was used to quilt a flower in the negative space.

Log Cabin for Dad - finish #016

A couple weeks before Christmas, I thought it would be good to make my dad and his wife a quilt for Christmas.  I asked his wife what her favorite colors were and started there.  Here favorite colors were purple and sage.  I decided to do a simple log cabin quilt.

This quilt was a quick piece and with a simple all over quilting design, it was quick to quilt.

Midnight Swoon - finish #015

I finally finished a King sized quilt for our bed!!  I liked the large size of the block in the pattern and the ability to use 2 fat quarters for each block. The size of the block made it perfect for doing king size.  I decided to make it 4*4 for a total of 16 blocks.  The only modification I made to the pattern was to make the sides an extra 2 inches on each side.  The result is that the quilt is a little long, but the width is perfect.  the quilt fits really well on our bed.

I did use the Longarm to quilt this quilt.  It took about 8 hours to quilt the whole thing.  I think it would have been too large to quilt on my domestic.  This quilt definitely has my favorite quilting I've done so far!

This Batting is my favorite so far!  I'll definitely be using this again.  However, I need to try some Wool options.

Timber - finish #14

This was one of the first patterns I really wanted to make when I first started quilting and I finally got around to it.  I was able to by a kit that had most of the solid fabrics for the main portion of the quilt, but decided to add in some Alison Glass Abacus prints to add some character :).  Since my husband's manly plaid quilt is starting to show some wear, I decided this pattern was manly enough to be his new quilt.  He likes his quilt to cover his head and feet, and at 6 foot, that means I have to make a big quilt.  So I decided to add the extra borders.  I didn't make them the full 15inches the pattern called for, but make them 12.5 instead.

Before I finished this top, I had just finished the quilt top for our King bed (see the Midnight Swoon quilt, finish #15).  I decided that I wanted to rent out time on a Longarm (at Accomplish Quilting) to quilt the King.  Since I spent so much time piecing the quilt, I wanted to practice on a different quilt before doing the King quilt.  So I decided it was time to finish the quilt top in order to quilt it on the Longarm first. 

I loved using the Longarm to quilt this.  The process was so much quicker than quilting on a domestic machine.  I spent only about 4 hours to quilt the whole quilt.

Our opinion of the Polyester batting is that I won't use it again. 

Fox and Friends Baby Quilt - Finish #013

Our friends are having another boy.  It is the same couple that received the Dinosaur baby quilt, my 4th quilt.  This is the 13th and I love seeing how my quilting skills have improved.

Fabric - Fox and Friends.  I got a layered cake from Massdrop that included these fabrics and a matching pillow panel and planned to use it on the next boy quilt I would be making.  I know that it has oranges like the Dinosaur quilt since it is going to the same family.

Pattern - Sassafras Lane Alligator Alley.  As soon as I saw this pattern, I knew it would be a good fit for the Fox and Friends layered cake I had. I wish the pattern had more detail, but I figured it out.  Once I had it figured out, it was pretty easy to put together!  I was able to make the quilt top in an afternoon.  I added borders to make the quilt a bit bigger and so I would have borders to quilt :).

Quilting - I went a bit crazy on this one, but I love how it turned out.  I've been interested in trying ruler quilting. Since I would be giving this quilt away, I thought it would be a good opportunity to try  it out.  I loved using the straight ruler to make my lines much straighter.  I ended up using the straight ruler to assist in the quilting of the non-focal print triangles. Ruler work takes longer than free motion, but it was definitely worth the extra time. I tried to use some of the curved rulers, but I wasn't loving the result, so I ended up just using the straight ruler.

In each of the focal print triangles, I rotates different free motion quilting designs.  FMQ designs were triangle paisley, wood grain, spirals with loops, loops, and pebbles.  If you look closely at the center most focal triangles, you will see the baby boys initials....... J.W.  I love this added detail.

Batting - I've continued trying new batting.  This one was the thinner version of the Quilters Dream Cotton.  Very easy to quilt with and obviously lighter than the thicker version.

Binding - I wanted to throw in more orange with the binding.  This is the second binding I've done orange on and I love the results.  Additionally, I did the thick, 1 inch binding which I think frames the quilt well.

Lastly, after the Latifah Saafir class with the Music City Modern Quilters Guild, I had to get a design wall.  It was super helpful when laying out the focal prints to make sure it was balances (much easier than using the floor).

Marcelle Medallion - pillow

I recently joined the Music City Modern Quilters Guild when they had a Latifah Saafir workshop.  Just a couple of months later, Alexia Abegg from Cotton+Steel came to give a lecture and do an afternoon workshop on the Marcelle Medallion Quilt.  I love how many quality events they have already put on.

The medallion has y-seams and I've always wanted to learn how to do them!  I was not sure about starting a full, new quilt since I only like have a 2 projects going on at a time.  I'm currently working on a King quilt for our bed using the Swoon pattern from Thimble Blossoms and an EEP project with the TulaNova pattern.  I also have a couple that I've put on hold until I finish these (Timber by Alison Glass and Fandango by Tula Pink).  I really love the Marcelle Medallion pattern, but I took the workshop mainly to learn the technique.  Then I figured I would either but it on hold or make a small project with it.

I've been wanting to do another pillow.  This time quilted and finished better than my first pillow.  I used Latifah Saafirs Magic Pillow Facing Tutorial and the pillow looks great.  I love the lining inside, so you don't see the seams.  And it is great to have it finished! I really don't like projects hanging over me. I might make the quilt in the future, but next time I'll make the Medallion with the paper piecing instructions instead of y-seams.
